The hike back will kick your butt but going down is easy, if you can beat the heat. Steven’s Trail in Colfax has some great canyon views and, while exposed, it does offer a nice respite at the North Fork of the American River. This time wasn’t as bad as before, (98 degress!) but I still get a little bored being on the canyon view nearly the whole time.

Made it to the end? Enjoy a river access point that might be swimmable during summer when snow melt isn’t making the river fast and darn cold. Don’t ask about the way up… If you’re trying to keep a steady pace then make sure you’ve got plenty of water handy as it’s a constant uphill slog. My recommendation: Wear a good hat as the canyon portions offer little shade.

Also, if you spot the shirtless bearded man, say hello. He’s nice and tell you which flora to eat or not. Not sure if he can be trusted, but I’m glad the sky turned fuchsia on the way back…
